MINI plant bosses are seeking 30 young people to be their next generation of apprentices in Oxford.

The car company has launched its 2015 drive for new recruits, who can earn while they learn engineering, logistics, finance or information technology.

Training, which is open to over-16s, leads to an NVQ level-three qualification and there is also a chance to take it through to degree level.

Chosen candidates, who start in August, will join 120 apprentices already enrolled in parent company BMW Group’s scheme at its Cowley factory.

Branagh Arden-Howard, 16, is half-way through the first year of an apprenticeship in maintenance engineering.

he former Wheatley Park School pupil, from Sandhills, said: “This is the best apprenticeship for my needs and you can go far once it’s completed.I am enjoying every aspect of the programme so far.”

Fellow first-year apprentice Liberty Lavelle  is training in logistics business technician. The 18-year-old, who lives in Headington, said: “I applied for the apprenticeship programme as I thought it was a fantastic opportunity to do a degree and also get hands-on experience of working in the real world.

“Also, the opportunity to work for such a renowned company and alongside professionals who are the best in the industry was a very exciting aspect.”

Paint and body technician apprentice Amy Johnson, 19, also in her first year, said: “I love it and the job suits me perfectly, as it is very hands-on.”

Mini Plant Oxford managing director Frank Bachmann said: “Investment in young people is a key part of our development strategy and it is vital that we attract the very best young talent to ensure the business has the right skills for the future. We are delighted to be able to offer young people the chance to join our apprenticeship scheme.”

Skills Minister Nick Boles said: “Apprenticeships make total business sense while giving people the chance of a high-quality and respected route in to employment.

“That’s why it’s so encouraging to see firms like BMW leading the way in 2015 by committing to employ more apprentices.”
