OXFORD CITY COUNCIL MEMORIAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAMME

OXFORD CITY COUNCIL
MEMORIAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAMME

Oxford City Council will be conducting the next round of memorial inspections during October to December 2014 as part of a five year rolling programme that will see the entire inventory of memorials assessed again for their stability and security.

The memorials that will be assessed during this year are at the following locations:
Headington Cemetery
St James' Churchyard, Cowley

These checks will be carried out as part of a legal requirement under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Any memorial found to be unstable will be made safe, where possible, with a wooden stake. Larger memorials may need to be carefully laid down within the grave space as a last resort.

It is anticipated that very few memorials will be found to be unstable during the forthcoming round of assessments. New memorials erected since September 2005 should all meet the new standards introduced to ensure that memorials remain secure and stable for decades.

For further information about the assessment programme, please contact the Cemeteries Service Office between 10.00 am and 4.00 pm Monday to Friday on 01865 252516.
