Pensioner Jim Corby sprang into action when he heard floorboards creaking upstairs in his Abingdon home.

The 65-year-old went to investigate but struggled to open the door to his grand-daughter’s bedroom.

Mr Corby barged his way in and discovered teenage burglar David Bryant behind the door.

He gave Bryant “a good punching” before restraining him and shouting for his grand-daughter to call the police.

Bryant was jailed for two years at Oxford Crown Court on Monday.

Mr Corby said: “My grand-daughter had only just left the house to see her aunt living next door and I do think ‘what if?’, what if she had been alone in the house?”
