A fire service spokesperson said a specialist hydraulic platform was used to allow the crew to access the roof area of the building from a secure cage which can be safely raised up to very high levels.
"Following a lightning strike, there was significant damage to the chimney and internal walls and, as such, the crews safely removed some of the loose bricks so that they could not fall on anyone below," the spokesperson said.
There were no reported injuries from anyone on scene and crews left the scene at 10.16am.
A weather warning was in place for the region and much of southern England from yesterday at 11pm with thunderstorms forecast until this morning (May 2) at 6am.
That warning was then extended until 10am today.
The Met Office had flagged the possibility of travel disruption and some flooding.
Continued storms were expected through this morning, before gradually clearing from the east.
