Oxfordshire's most famous resident David Beckham has donated a football shirt to raise funds for a local charity.

The former Manchester United and England star, who owns a £12million home in Great Tew, near Chipping Norton, has donated an Inter Miami shirt to Banbury and District Samaritans to be auctioned. 

Mr Beckham, president and co-owner of Inter Miami, will personally sign the shirt for the winning bidder.

All proceeds will go to help the branch running costs and means it can answer more calls for help.

The branch celebrates its 50th anniversary this spring and volunteer Tim Brooks came up with the idea of approaching their megastar neighbour to see if could help.

He told the BBC: "Why don’t we ask him if he can help us because actually the worst thing that can happen is he just says no for whatever reason.

"There’s no downside to asking him.

"So I got hold of his PA’s email and address and just simply wrote and explained the situation and said, you know, is Mr Beckham able to help us in any way?”

He added: “You can have your name or you might be a dad buying it for their child and they might put the child’s name rather than the winner’s name.

"The winner gets to say what name goes on it – and signed by the great man himself."

Minimum bid is currently £370 and there are 12 days to go.

The winner will be announced at the branch's anniversary party at Banbury Town Hall next month.

In December 2017 shoppers were left starstruck when Mr Beckham was spotted with his daughter Harper shopping in B&Q in Banbury.

And in 2020 football fan Addison Smiley snapped a selfie with Mr Beckham who was shopping for Halloween props at party shop Sweet Celebrations on Church Lane in the town.

Addison who was also queuing with his mother to buy a Halloween costume was over the moon when he saw one of his ‘long-time heroes’ stroll out the door.

Mr Beckham spent a staggering £400 on fruit and vegetables during one trip with Harper to recently closed fine food emporium Mrs Bumbles in Burford.

Meanwhile son Romeo, then 18, arrived with his girlfriend in a £45k Jeep to buy sweets from Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe in Chipping Norton on Christmas Eve 2020.

A recent Netflix documentary gave viewers a glimpse inside the Beckhams' Soho Farmhouse-inspired retreat which now boasts a sauna, plunge pool, football pitch, gym, swimming pool and £50,000 safari tent in the grounds for entertaining.
