CONDITONS could not have been much worse for matchmen last Sunday morning – cold, wet and windy, plus some snow flurries, but a few hardy souls decided to brave it.

And those in North Oxf-ord’s fixture on the Thames at Godstow found it worthwhile, with some encouraging signs for the future as silver fish figured prominently.

Dace and small roach featured in the top three catches, saying much for the water quality.

Terry Whittington took top spot with 9.13.0 of roach and dace on pole-fished red maggot.

Second-placed John Coleman caught around 160 gudgeon and small dace on the same tactics for 8.7.0, followed by Mick Watson, with 3.14.0 of silver fish.

Ten anglers fished Marston AC’s Secretary’s Cup on the club’s Cherwell stretch, which looked perfect. However, the fishing was hard for most.

Two anglers tied for first place with 5lb exactly.

Steve Tomkins had a perch and a 4lb chub on pole and chopped worm, while Graham Bradshaw caught two perch and four roach on pole and red maggot.

Wayne Rudman had a single perch of 1.15.0 for third.

There was another tie for top spot in Charlbury’s Open on the Evenlode.

Mark Taylor and Steve Arthurs both had 6.5.0 of chub and dace, Geoff Townsend finishing third with 4.12.0.

Six Sutton Courtenay members fished their Hewer Challenge Cup on the Appleford reach of the Thames, which turned into an endurance test.

Only two weighed in, Trevor Martin catching two chub for 5.8.0 on breadpaste, and Gary Stafford taking small dace and chub on breadpunch for eight ounces.

Littlemore AS fished their Blind Pairs on the Channel, the seven anglers returning a creditable 16.3.0 of fish.

Vernon Adams took the silverware with a 4.4.0 net of perch on feeder with maggot and worm, also picking up the golden peg worth £97.

Alan Campbell had a solitary 3.15.0 chub on bread on his first cast, while Brian Hutchings claimed third place with 3.12.0 of silver fish taken on pole and feeder.

Two chub on legered worm and bread were enough to earn John Spencer victory in Tackley Estates AC’s match on the Cherwell at Northbrook.

His 7.4.0 edged out Monty Finnemore (Predator), who was four ounces behind with 7.0.0, comprising two chub.

Tim Wray had a chub of 2.13.0, plus a few bits, on legered bread for third.
