TERRY Russell, of South Moreton BC, near Didcot, produced a terrific performance to claim the vacant Queensbury League’s national super-middleweight title at Epsom racecourse.
Russell, from Wantage, went in as the underdog against Oxford-based Pole Artur Gorka in the semi-pro contest, which was screened live on Eurosport.
After counter-punching for the first two rounds, Russell took the fight to his opponent for the last three, rocking him on a number of occasions, to win a unanimous points decision.
Russell said: “I thought the fight went exactly to our game plan and being crowned the champion is an amazing feeling.

“Coming into the fight we’d worked on coming forward with lots of head movement and really putting the pressure on, and after the first round Gorka seemed to lose a lot of his strength.
“Performance-wise I felt it was one of my best, and now I’ve got the belt I’m looking forward to defending it early next year against Jason Felix and remaining champion.”
