Substitute Brad Shaw’s brilliant strike deep into injury completed a stunning comeback by Wantage Town , who recorded their first away victory in Southern League Division 1 South & West on Saturday, beating Tiverton Town 2-1.
With five minutes left , the visitors trailed 1-0, but Jimmy Deabill equalised before Shaw’s goal left hosts Tiverton stunned.
In an eventful first half, Wantage’s Tom Melledew long-range shot was straight at the keeper, while visiting keeper Lee Farrow had to pull off some fine saves.
With 20 minutes left, Tiverton finally got the breakthrough, when a cross deflected into the box and Owen Howe headed home from close in.
Deabill missed a golden chance to level with an unchallenged header going wide on 80 minutes.
But the big striker equalised five minutes later, with a great glancing header for his fourth goal of the campaign.
Just as both teams looked like they had settled for the point, up stepped substitute Shaw, who beat two men on a winding run before firing home a thunderbolt into the top corner for the winner.
Wantage Tn: Farrow, Sadler, DaCosta, Steedman, Millward (Shaw 64), Lacaaz, Barder, Melledew, Deabill, Guy, Jones (Riccio 70). Subs not used: Tucker, Davis.
Attendance: 208.
