BRADLEY Smith, Hannah England and Alice Powell are the high-profile names in the running for honours at the 2013 Oxfordshire Sports Awards.

The trio head the shortlists for this year’s event, which takes place at Oxford’s Kassam Stadium on Friday, November 29.

The awards, run by the Oxfordshire Sports Partnership with the Oxford Mail as official media partners, showcase the county’s best sporting talent.

MotoGP rider Smith and 1,500m runner England are former winners, while Powell has made the final three before, but not yet won.

Smith, who is set to secure a place in the world’s top ten when his season climaxes in Spain this weekend, is up against Ben Watson and Ben Kelsey in the sportsman of the year category.

Weightlifter Watson, from Didcot, broke the British record in the clean and jerk and also competed for his country in the European Under 23 Championships to earn his place among the finalists, while Oxford’s Kelsey was crowned the world’s strong-est man in the under 105kg category.

Powell, from Chipping Norton, narrowly missed out on becoming the first women to win motorsport’s F3 Cup a fortnight ago.

England came fourth in the World Athletics Championships in Moscow, while the shortlist for the sportswoman of the year is completed by rising equestrian star Izzy Taylor, from Aynho, near Banbury, who received a call-up to the British team for the first time this year.

While some well-known names feature in the shortlists, many other finalists will be unknown to most, ensuring that the awards cover every aspect of sport in the county.

The team of the year sees Oxford City Stars ice hockey side up against Oxford United Ladies Football Club and Chinnor Rugby Club’s 2nd XV, all of whom impre-ssed greatly when claiming their their respective leagues this year.

A total of 21 different sports feature in the 30-strong list of potential award winners.
