Oxford City have signed Swindon Town’s teenage striker, Kayden Jackson, on loan and he could make his debut at Harrogate Town in Skrill North tomorrow, writes MATTHEW BRUCE.
The 19-year-old has yet to play for Swindon’s first team, but has scored 12 goals in 14 appearances while on loan at Calor League Division 1 South & West side Swindon Supermarine before being recalled earlier this week.
City manager Mike Ford said: “He gives us something slightly different regarding the role he plays up front.
“He’s got pace, he can finish, he’s someone who has the drive and ambition to make a difference and I think he’ll freshen us up a bit.”
Jackson, who may get his chance with Mike Symons unavailable, admitted he was stepping into the unknown.
“To be honest, I don’t think I could even name a single Oxford player!” said Jackson, who secured a Swindon deal in the Samsung Win a Pro Contract competition.
“I’m just looking to continue the momentum from my last loan move, keep scoring goals and creating goals and hopefully get a few more wins for the team.
“As long as we’re winning I’ll be happy, I just want to contribute to that.”
Midfielder Michael Pook is expected to start after impressing as a second-half substitute last weekend, and is likely to be joined by the returning Chris Palmer, who was cup-tied for last week’s trip to Dover Athletic.
Ford was disappointed with his side’s display as they lost 3-0 in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round, and wants to more consistency.
“Having lost last week and not put up a real fight, it’s focused my mind on the next part of the season because to be honest we’ve underachieved,” he said.
“If we can go to Eastleigh at the top of Conference South and win, and if we can get a draw away at Altrincham, then we can match anyone in this league, North or South.
“But if we’re doing that and then losing 3-0 at Dover or Hednesford, or losing at home to Colwyn Bay, then it suggests that the players are not mentally prepared to battle every week.
“I’ve stuck by some players and I’m not going to say they owe me, but for the good of their own careers, they should be doing better every week.”
And after hinting that he may make changes to his squad if performances don’t improve consistently, Ford challenged his players to prove they are up to the task when they face Harrogate.
“When the whistle goes tomorrow we’ve got to realise that we have to turn up if we’re going to get anything from the game,” he said.
