City councillor for Northfield Brook Steve Curran resigned yesterday.
The Labour councillor has done so to stand as his party’s candidate in the upcoming county council Leys by-election triggered by the resignation of Val Smith.
New rules introduced by the local branch of the Labour Party prevent their councillors from “dual-hatting” – or sitting on both district and county councils. Mr Curran is the fifth Labour city councillor to resign since May’s council elections.
A date for both the Leys by-election and the Northfield Brook by-election have not been set.
