THE victims of the Srebrenica massacre in Bosnia-Herzegovina will be remembered in Oxford with a memorial service and week-long remembrance art project.
Next week marks the 23rd year since 8,372 mostly Bosnian Muslim men and boys were murdered by Bosnian Serb forces.
A service will take place at Town Hall on Wednesday at 11am.
The theme for this year's memorial service will be 'Act of Courage' and will focus on the stories of those who refused to turn on each other and undertook extraordinary acts of bravery during the darkest of times.
An exhibition created by local artist Katie Taylor, through Oxford City Council funding, will be free to view at the Town Hall from Monday and throughout Srebrenica Memorial Week.
The project involves printing 8372 individually numbered business cards that will contain a brief paragraph explaining what happened at Srebrenica in 1995.
From July 11, the artist will hand out these business cards - each represented an unnamed victim - in public spaces as an act of remembrance.
Oxford City Council hoped it would also raise awareness and serves as a reminder of the consequences of hate.
Lord Mayor of Oxford, Colin Cook, said: "I hope Oxford residents will be able to join me in this act of remembrance at the Town Hall where we will be paying tribute to the victims and survivors of this massacre."
