PRESSED Steel were one of the top football teams in Oxfordshire.
They were so successful that the Pressed Steel company, whose workers made car bodies at Cowley, provided the players with a new ground and stand at Romanway.
This picture, taken in about 1960, comes from left winger Danny Maskell – on the right in the front row – who earlier played as a professional for Watford and Headington United, before they became Oxford United.
Several other former Headington players from the 1950s joined the club at that time. They included the Pressed Steel manager Vic Barney, who had captained Headington, pictured far left, in the suit and tie.
Mr Maskell, of Gordon Close, Old Marston, recalls: “The Hellenic League was new and allowed teams to include a few professionals.
“We were a fantastic team with a fantastic following – 300 to 400 people would watch us. That was why the company agreed to build the stand.”
Others pictured include Bill Jones, Peter Robinson, Jack Casley, John Varny, Danny Spiers and J Fleming.
