ONE man at the piano and three men standing around it, two of them smoking cigarettes – what was the likely scenario?
The man on the right will be instantly recognised by many Memory Lane readers – Oxford Mail cartoonist Alan Course, who has featured regularly in our pages this year.
The man next to him is Duggie Pearce, but we don’t know the names of the two men on the left, or anything about the occasion.
Judging by the smart suits and ties, it was clearly a formal occasion.
Can anyone tell us what it was, or where it was held?
As we recalled (Memory Lane, May 14), Alan Course was a man of many parts, working at various times as a police constable, entertainer, landlord of three pubs, fire extinguisher salesman, author of guide books and telephone operator as well as a skilled cartoonist.
The picture comes from a collection belonging to Sheila Charles, of Church Lane, Wendlebury, near Bicester.
Write to me if you can shed any light on the other men, and what the occasion was.
