ABOUT £42m of funding for transport, schools and community projects will be given the go ahead following the first phase of a County Hall spending review.
Oxfordshire County Council is planning to save £200m over the next four years as it prepares for expected cuts in Government funding – a move that will lead to significant job losses and the shelving of major schemes.
Last month, the council suspended its entire capital programme and said every project would need to be re-examined in light of the predicted economic gloom.
But it is now set to release cash for some critical schemes, those with substantial funding from other sources, and those where spending money will lead to longer term savings.
The county council schemes to get the go-ahead are:
Loans to Foster Parents/Adoptive Parents Programme
Improvements at Fitzwaryn School, Wantage
New sixth form accommodation at Cooper School, Bicester
Replacement of Wallingford Young People and Children's Centre
Facilities for The Net Young People's Centre, Abingdon
A new building to accommodate a new Chipping Norton Young People and Adult Learning Centre
Measures to improve air quality and introduce an Air Quality Management Area in the centre of Wallingford
Woodgreen/West End cycle route, Witney – creation of a new pedestrian and cycle track between Woodstock Road and Newland
Introduction of self-service machines in some libraries
Improvement work at the Oxfordshire Record Office, Cowley
£6.4m for improvements to care home provision in Oxfordshire
Funding to enhance existing sheltered accommodation and adding care facilities to existing sheltered schemes.
Support funding to enable social housing providers to deliver viable extra care housing projects
Funding to enhance accommodation to provide supported living accommodation for adults with a learning disability
Development of an ICT system for adult social care
Funds for minor maintenance work to schools and other buildings from which council services are delivered
Money to help schools reduce their carbon footprint and conserve energy
A county council contribution of £300,000 toward Abingdon Museum’s refurbishment
A £5.7m contribution to improvements at Didcot railway station forecourt
Witney Cogges link road
A new community facility in Bampton
