HUNDREDS of Oxford schoolchildren got to meet a top children’s author at a special event for World Book Day.
About 400 children from St Gregory the Great School, in Cricket Road, and local primary schools met Summertown author Maria Guadalupe Harris, pen name MG Harris, for the launch of her new book, Ice Shock, today.
To tie in with the Mexican theme of the novel, the school held a Mexican day with staff wearing ponchos and the canteen serving dishes from the country.
Children asked Mrs Harris questions about her writing, characters and life as an author.
Mrs Harris, who has lived in Oxford since she was a student in 1984, is a foundation governor of the school.
Headteacher John Hussey said: “It was a fabulous success. The youngsters were very excited and it was a terrific presentation.
“She also did some work with our students in small groups as part of our own world book week last week.
“The lovely part of it is that our own rotunda building actually features in the book – there is a special link between the book and the school.”
