Oxford's Lord Mayor Susanna Pressel demonstrated a head for heights as she carried out the historic custom of inspecting the city walls.
Ms Pressel toured the section of wall which still stands in the grounds of New College.
The tradition dates back to 1379 when the Bishop of Winchester, who founded the college, bought the land from King Richard II.
New College was built in such a way that the city walls could no longer be inspected from inside without entering the college's grounds.
So a royal command was granted that the college should allow the city access to the ground once every three years to inspect theim. Ms Pressel said: "The Inspection of the City Walls is a rare traditional ceremony which brings Town and Gown together.
"The New College gardens looked superb and we were made very welcome."
