The Oxford Mail has opened a book of condolence for a man who has died in a van fire outside a closed village pub on a main road in Oxfordshire.

Emergency services were called to A436 at the junction with the A44 outside the Greedy Goose near Chastleton where a silver Volkswagen Transporter van was on fire on Sunday (May 12) at around 8am.

The fire was extinguished by Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue but a man who was in the van died at the scene, police have confirmed.

Drone images of the fire, which closed the road in both directions between the A44 and the road for Cornwell, show forensic officers at the scene with the burnt-out vehicle in a nearby layby.

Thames Valley Police has described the death as “unexplained” and do not believe there to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.

The force has launched an appeal for witnesses and is urging anyone who was in the area between 6.30am and 8.30am to come forward if they witnessed the incident by making a report online or by calling 101, quoting reference 43240219677.
