Firefighters "battled flames for a number of hours" after a lorry burst into flames on the A34.

Images from the scene showed huge flames coming from the HGV and thick black smoke billowing.

Another image shows the shell of a lorry as the tarmac which was damaged.

Five fire engines from Rewley Road, Slade, Abingdon and Kidlington fire stations, as well as a water carrier from Wheatley, were called to A34 in Oxford at 1.30am this morning (Saturday April 13) .

They discovered "a large, well-developed HGV fire".

Firefighters "battled the flames for a number of hours in extremely arduous conditions" to get the fire under control.

Fortunately, no one was seriously injured, Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

"This was a challenging incident which required a great deal of work from firefighters, as well as our colleagues from Thames Valley Police, South Central Ambulance Service, National Highways and Oxfordshire County Council’s Emergency Planning Team," they added.

The A34 between Botley and Hinksey Interchanges has been closed for much of the day following the fire which caused extensive road surface damage.

The fire service said: "Thank you to the local community for their support and understanding during this incident."
