LARRY Sanders, the brother of US firebrand senator Bernie Sanders, has returned to Oxfordshire’s political frontline again as a general election candidate.
Announcing he will run in the Oxford East constituency, the Green Party candidate warned next June 8’s snap General Election was a battle ‘of life and death’.
Mr Sanders has lived in East Oxford for 47 years and is a former county councillor. He ran unsuccessfully against Conservative Nicola Blackwood in Oxford West and Abingdon in 2015 and most recently against Witney MP Robert Courts last October, also a Conservative.
He said: “Oxford East is one of the areas that understand and hate the growth of anti-minority politics, the rise of the Trumps, and the success of the Theresa Mays in making life harder for most of us.
“We have a sense of community, that people can work together, that we will not be left high and dry when things go wrong.
“I am proud that my brother has become the most popular politician in America and a powerful opponent of Trump, by consistently urging the same message: a government has to work for all its people, not just the very rich. I have tried to do the same.
“We are in a battle that is literally life and death, and will not end with the election.”
This was due to the ‘starvation and privatisation’ of the National Health Service, the lack of affordable housing and a crisis in funding for social care, he said.
Mr Sanders added: “Britain is the most unequal country in Europe. Our politics has to change.”
Dr Kirsten Johnson has been confirmed as the Liberal Democrat candidate and Suzanne Bartington for the Conservatives. Anneliese Dodds will stand for Labour.
