THEIR beaming faces said it all.
Yesterday’s thrilling win over Swansea City has made Oxford United the biggest talking point of the FA Cup so far.
Nearly 12,000 fans packed into the sold-out Kassam Stadium to see their team win 3-2 over the Premier League outfit and last night supporters were still getting their heads round the incredible result.
Proudly clutching his Oxford United flag at the game was TV presenter and broadcaster Timmy Mallett. He said: “It was a sensational day, completely and utterly sensational. It was a magical game of football.
“The atmosphere was just absolutely brilliant. It’s set the weekend alight.”
Also in the crowd were four supporters from Rotterdam in the Netherlands, who travelled to Oxford especially for the match.
Our top stories
One of them, Michel De Bruin, 25, first discovered the U’s after choosing the team to play as in the video game series FIFA and soon became a diehard fan. He spent £150 making the journey from Holland to the Kassam.
He said: “This is my fifth time coming to see Oxford United but obviously this is the biggest match I have been to.
“I enjoyed the match very much, we didn’t know what to expect but what happened at the end was like a dream come true.”
Timmy Mallett at the ground
Nine-year-old Erin Bowler, from Standlake, took in the sights and sounds of the ground with her father Darren.
She said: “It was a really hard game because Swansea are such a good team. I thought Oxford would win 2-1 so I wasn’t too far off.”
Friends Shaun Edwards, from Abingdon, and Jack Hemmings, from Hertfordshire, were two of many fans who congregated outside, as people drank and cheered outside the stadium following the full-time whistle.
Mr Edwards said: “It was fantastic, there were some great goals and I thought Oxford really deserved it. I thought it was going to be a draw but it looks like we were wrong.”
