A COUNTRY road near Drayton where a woman died in a crash must have a lower speed limit, the area’s MP has said.
Ed Vaizey, MP for Wantage, urged Oxfordshire County Council to reduce the limit on the B4016 between Drayton and Sutton Courtenay from 40 to 30mph.
Claire Caldwell, 43, from Oaks Caravan Park at Fyfield Wick, was a passenger when she died in a crash on Monday, July 27.
Coroner Darren Salter opened an inquest into her death last month and said the car crashed into a tree.
Mr Vaizey visited the crash site last week after he was contacted by a number of concerned residents.
After the visit he said: “I have concerns that the current speed limit of 40mph is neither being observed by drivers nor enforced by the authorities. A reduction of the speed limit down to 30mph would at least allow traffic calming measures to be put in place.
“Surely this tragedy should act as a wake-up call to the county council that something has to be done to prevent an incident like this ever happening again.”
The county council said it would carry out a speed survey that would be used to decide whether to reduce the limit.
