Residents in Marston, Oxford, have been told they will have to wait five years for a new bus shelter.

Croft Road resident Michael Haines claimed Marston was at the bottom of the city council's list of priorities.

He said: "Barton and Risinghurst are not waiting for five years for new bus shelters. Neither is Blackbird Leys.

"There are some that are going in sooner. Why are we being made to wait as long as this when other areas are not?

"It's wrong, and I feel this is yet another example of Marston being forgotten while other areas get the work done."

Oxford City Council has pledged to install more than 180 new bus shelters across the city over the next five years.

Its schedule of work in Marston will see four new shelters installed in the first year, three in the second year, four in the third year, one in the fourth, and one - in Marston Road near the junction with Jack Straw's Lane - in the fifth.

Mr Haines added: "There are a lot of elderly people in the Marston area who use buses to get about. New shelters are vital to them.

"Our shelters have windows missing, holes in the roof, and are badly vandalised. We desperately need the new shelters."

George Evans, 76, of Marston Road said: "I think it's disgusting we have to wait as long as that for the new shelters, even three years is too long.

"The bus stop opposite my house has no seats for old people to sit down and they are forced to stand and wait. There is no point doing half at a time, they should do them all at once."

Mother-of-two Hillary Godfrey, 45, of Lynn Close said: "Surely carrying out the work in dribs and drabs like this is going to cost the taxpayer more money.

"Why not stick to one area and get it all done at once?"

Oxford City Council said there were other bus shelters due for installation in year five, in Banbury Road, Cowley Road, Abingdon Road and St Aldate's.

Council spokesman Chris Lee said: "It is inaccurate to say Marston is at the bottom of the priority list for new shelters. Priority is given to areas where shelters are in most need."

So, we can conclude: Oxford City Council had a meeting about how to replace their bus shelters. They decided that Marston was lowest priority and that they would punish the old people who live there by not replacing one of the thirteen they are replacing in Marston until the fifth year. They decided to do this in order to spend more money than they needed to.

Im probably asking a really stupid question here, but why does anywhere need a bus shelter, a pole in the ground has worked to date.

Didn't you know - old people melt if they get wet. They can't hold an umbrella because they're too old. So they need a shelter to protect them from the nasty rain while they wait five minutes for their bus that they travel free on.

Did they, no i didnt know that. Then that is fair enough.

I agree. Marston shouldn't be the bottom priority. It should be like Barton, Risinghurst and Blackbird Leys.

I am guessing these shelters are already sized and just a case of assembling, like you would a flat pack garden shed, so it should not take that long, maybe a day to lay the floor, and a day to assemble, then a day to put in the glass and paint, but we are talking Oxford City Council here where you have one man working and five stood about watching.

Aren't they actually being installed by the advertising company with whom they did the deal? I think so. And the one new one I've seen appears to be at a stop that didn't have a shelter before, which seems to me a better priority than one that has some kind of shelter, even if a leaky one. There are plenty of such stops, without a shelter at present, on Marston Road. I hope they get one before others are replaced (especially because one of them is one I use!)

Would it not have been more appropriate to install new shelters on the extermities of the city rather than the badly sited one at Carfax?

Shock horror story - bus shelters to be installed in city. Council not able to instal all at once so some go in later than others. How could this happen in a modern day society? Do we all have such a degenerated morality these days that we will allow this to happen? And note its not just in Marston - Banbury Road, Cowley Road, Abingdon Road, St Aldates - all of these places will have sone shelters being put later than others. I call it just sick, although the solution is fairly obvious. The council simply needs to keep putting up bus shelters and never stop. That way no-one ever need be last...

These old people gave both their lives in two world wars for this country and had to walk 17 miles to school while sharing one shoe with their seven brothers and sisters, is this any way to treat them? How dare the city council leave one shelter out of thirteen till last to replace - if that doesn't show they don't care about Marston and love trampling on the graves of war veterans, I don't know what does.

Five years - is that when the next bus is due?

Some people selfishly pursuing their own agenda. Somewhere along the line, somebody is always going to be the last in the line, thats life. How selfish of these people to think they are any more needy than any other group of people in the city, be it Risinghurst, Barton, Cowley, Iffley or Botley. YOU ARE VERY SELFISH PEOPLE - be happy that you have a shelter and will be getting a new one as the scheme is rolled out and the contracts are getting around to putting them up in the city.

You need a bus shelter so that all the underage chavettes can shag their spotty boyfriends under cover, the shelter would also come in handy for drug dealing/taking and would give the local yobs something new to vandalise.

No doubt after five years, three will be built at the same time.

Do not be so silly. The indicator board says 12 minutes.

Although this may be 'Dr Who' time. Be wary out there you may be run over by a Bus; if you can find one on Marston Road?

What is a 'Bus'?

You maybe lucky. In London last weekend jumped on a bus 40 second journey, two stops, Fare £2-00.

Say no more. Get a travel/oyster card if you visit the Capital!

I suppose showing a picture of the actual bus stop at the junction with Jack Straws Lane (i.e the one that will be replaced in 5 years) is too much to ask? After all, "nearly new bus stop in perfect state of repair to be replaced in 5 years" wouldn't make half such an interesting story.

SHUT UPYour talking like it is only old war heroes which use the bus, that is a pathetic argument when it comes to these bus stops, maybe we should be thinking of the pregnant, young, disabled, elderly. I still think this is a stupid arguement. As said earlier on, the shelter will only get damaged and make marston look worse.

Ruth, there appears to be a picture at the top of this story of the actual bus SHELTER, the one that this story is about. To be fair, it does look a bit ropey. Can't you see it?

Ruth, former Marston Resident says...

No, the picture DOESN'T show the bus shelter at the Jack Straws Lane junction, it shows a different bus shelter and the story doesn't state when the bus shelter pictured is due to be replaced, for all we know it could be one of the first on the list.

So these people have got together for a photo in a shelter that's probably one of the first to be replaced, then start complaining that one of the better ones will be left for five years. They should all be shot, or at least the OM should be closed down for inventing a story out of pretty much nothing at all. If I were the City Council I'd sue the OM.
