Marc West has a surprise when what looks like the hottest disco in the city is populated by tiny tots

It was so busy a one-in one-out policy was in operation on the door. This must be the hottest ticket in town, I thought.

Once finally inside, I delved through the smoky darkness and on to the mirrorball-lit dance floor to be greeted by a most unusual sight. Had I just discovered Cowleyfornia’s newest hangout for the kool kids? Yes… if you’re five-years-old that is.

Baby Boogie at the Pegasus Theatre on Magdalen Road is a thoroughly unique opportunity for children and their parents alike to pull some shapes together and indulge their inner Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. While they may not be making the kind of moves to impress the judges on Strictly (just yet), they’re certainly scoring top marks for rhythm… and, most importantly, having a huge amount of fun wiggling and wobbling to the toons being spun on DJ Eldorado’s wheels of steel.

Now a regular feature of the Dancin’ Oxford festival, this hip-happy-happening had young and old bouncing off the walls (literally).

At the start of the session there’s the chance to pick up some new moves from a professional tutor before getting creative yourself and hitting the floor.

Craft activities and face painting also take place across the afternoon, so don’t be surprised to find some lil’ tigers, floating butterflies and magical wizards all getting down to an eclectic mash-up from the likes of Chic, Michael Jackson and Village People.

And, best of all for parents, when home time comes rest assured your little ones will be sufficiently worn out for you to get a fantastic night’s sleep for once.

In fact, it’s been such a runaway success, the organisers tell me they plan to roll it out every other month throughout the year, so you can look forward to plenty more opportunities to catch up on some well-needed shut eye.
