APPRENTICES are being fast tracked into key roles at a specialist firm.
A major aspect of Maylarch Environmental’s work is focused on asbestos detection and removal, and apprentices are being trained specifically in surveying buildings and demolition sites for the hazardous material.
The latest recruit to the Eynsham-based firm is Dexter Lancaster who will be combining on-site training with an NVQ level two course in business administration at Abingdon and Witney College.
Mr Lancaster, 19, said: “I found I learn things a lot easier doing practical activities, rather than reading from text books, sitting in a classroom all day.
“An apprenticeship is definitely the right choice for me.”
The former pupil of Henry Box School, Witney, is following in the footsteps of 20-year-old Sean Reynolds who is now working as a full-time asbestos surveyor.
Mr Reynolds said: “The apprenticeship has allowed me to gain an educational qualification, while working hands on every day which is perfect for me. I enjoyed the apprenticeship and found the NVQ work easier to manage between working on site, as it was varied.”
Managing director Nick Williamson said: “We follow a training programme designed by the Construction Industry Training Board.
“Our apprentices have the confidence that they are being trained to the highest level and following the best practices of the industry. In return, we know we can rely on their professionalism and enthusiasm to do a great job.”
