Potholes could be to blame for a high level of MOT failures due to shock absorber issues in Oxfordshire, according to new research.

According to analysis by used-vehicle buyer Money4YourMotors, MOT failures due to underperformance of shock absorbers are more common in Oxfordshire than they are across the nation on average.

Almost 30,000 MOT tests in the region flagged faults with shock absorbers, while nearly two in five minor (category B and C) roads in the county are flagged as amber or red, indicating substandard road surfaces.

Potholes and similar issues are known to impact car suspension systems, which potentially explains the higher shock absorber failures in Oxfordshire.

Nation-wide car buying manager at Money4YourMotors, Warren Edwards, said: "The government data shows a clear connection between the condition of local roads and MOT failures related to the suspension of vehicles in Oxfordshire so drivers in the area should be wary when on the road.

"If you suspect that you have an issue with your suspension, shocks and springs, then there are a number of checks you can conduct to determine the issue before its time for your MOT test.

"If your vehicle is pulling to one side while driving, this could be a sign that your shock absorbers need changing."

He also suggested performing a 'bounce test' by pushing down on the bonnet of the car.

The car should bounce no more than three times.
