Oxford United fans walked out of Wembley beaming from ear to ear after seeing their team put on a brilliant performance to take them up to the Championship.

Josh Murphy scored twice in the first half during an 11-minute period causing bedlam amongst Yellows fans inside Wembley Stadium with it being enough to seal promotion with a 2-0 win in the League One play-off final. 

Wembley’s arches turned blue and yellow after the historic win as fans headed back home after seeing Des Buckingham’s side return to the second tier of English football for the first time in 25 years.

The U’s earned their play-off spot on the final day of the season with a win at Exter City before beating Peterborough 2-1 over a two-legged semi-final.

Speaking inside the stadium, fan Peter Cudd said: “Absolutely brilliant. I was at Peterborough away. I did not think we would do that.

“Every time Oxford United has been at Wembley I have been here.

"I was here in 1986 (Oxford United’s League Cup win) but I reckon this is better.”

Another fan, Chris, who did not provide a surname, described the performance as “superb”, already having an eye on how next season will go.

He said: “It will be hard financially, but you never know. Let’s see how we go. We can’t be better off.”

However, Yellows fan Andy Kemp said: "I think we will do better [in the Championship] than people think."

TV presenter, Michaela Strachan of the The Really Wild Show and Springwatch, celebrated with her family and friends including Timmy Mallett.

Posting online, she said: “Great day for Oxford United. Promoted to the Championship. Well done you Yellows!

“They played like champions and won. Fantastic crowd at Wembley stadium.”

Club captain Elliott Moore led his side up the famous Wembley steps to lift the trophy to a sea of yellow.

The celebrations then carried onto the pitch as the players paraded the trophy to the fans who then headed back out onto Wembley Way to soak in the post-match atmosphere.

Leader of Oxford City Council, Susan Brown said: "What a result, and congratulations to the Yellows for their promotion to the Championship.

“It's been 25 years since they last played in the second tier and there have been some very dark days along the way, which makes today all the sweeter.

"Enjoy your celebrations, and I look forward to seeing the team back in Oxford with their trophy.

"This is your day - well done, you Yellows!"

County councillor Liam Walker, who is a U's superfan, said: “They deserve this so much. It was only a matter of time and today. Oxford United smashed it. We are going up!”
